Over the past few years, my parents have both been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Does this mean I will develop the condition?

Answer

People with parents or siblings with type 2 diabetes are three times more likely to also develop type 2 diabetes, compared to people with no family history of the disease. If both of your parents have type 2 diabetes, your risk is about one in two of developing it.

This may be only partially due to genetics. Lifestyle habits such as diet, obesity, and physical activity tend to run in families and are all risk factors for developing diabetes. This makes it difficult to figure out if type 2 diabetes is caused by genetics or lifestyle habits. By making changes in these habits, however, you can delay or prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes.
