Answer

Being aware of your diet with diabetes is important. Eating foods with lots of carbohydrates and sugars can cause a spike in blood sugar, but eating these foods is not completely off limits. You can eat these foods, just in small amounts. Small amounts of sweet foods cause less of a spike in blood sugar. Instead of eating the whole chocolate bar, only eat a small portion and save the rest for another day.

People with diabetes should focus their meals on foods with fewer carbohydrates and more fiber. Vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, nonfat dairy, fish, and lean meats are full of nutrients and are the best foods to focus on. If you are trying to lose weight, a low-fat, low-calorie diet or something like the Mediterranean diet would be good options. Cutting out sugary snacks and snacks before bedtime will also help with weight loss without feeling like you are on a diet.
