Does Coffee Worsen Chronic Pain?

I drink at least two cups of coffee a day. A friend of mine, who knows that I deal with chronic pain, suggested that maybe I should cut back on my caffeine intake in order to improve my symptoms. Is this true? Can drinking coffee make chronic pain worse?

Answer

In general, there doesn't seem to be much of a link between coffee and chronic pain. Some studies have linked caffeine use to chronic headaches, but this information cannot be generalized to all types of chronic pain.

Nevertheless, if coffee seems to make your pain worse, certainly try eliminating it from your diet to see if it helps. If you suspect that it may be the caffeine in coffee that is the culprit, you might consider switching to decaf, particularly if you feel deprived without your daily cup(s) of coffee.
