Are Stress and Chronic Pain Linked?

In addition to having three young kids, I have a stressful career and chronic pain from a surgery I underwent several years ago. I’ve heard that stress can make chronic pain worse. Is this true? And, if so, how much of an impact does stress have on chronic pain?

Answer

The relationship between chronic pain and stress is a complicated one, since chronic pain increases stress, and stress affects chronic pain. This leads to a vicious cycle that can be difficult to break. A combination of optimal pain management with pain medications or other types of treatments, along with measures to reduce stress, such as relaxation exercises, reducing daily stresses, and so on, will help you deal with both sides of the equation.
