Will I Be Able to Work While Undergoing Cancer Treatment?

I start cancer treatment soon. I feel like I'm ready, but to be honest, I'm terrified that it might cause me to lose my ability to support myself. Will I be able to work while undergoing cancer treatment?

Answer

Perhaps -- some people may be able to work as usual during treatment, some may need a modified or reduced work schedule, and some may need to take significant time off from work. It all depends on what type of treatment you need and what side effects you experience. There are a number of different treatment side effects that may limit your ability to work. In addition, you'll need to take into account all the time you'll need for doctor appointments, chemo and/or radiation sessions, and recovery from surgery. You may need to take time off if you need to travel to receive your treatment.

Most people find it easiest to tell their managers (and probably their coworkers, too) about their diagnosis. Keeping it a secret may simply lead to misunderstandings and resentment.

Your job may be protected, in that you may be able to take time off without risking your job, under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), but the FMLA doesn't apply to all businesses.
