Is It True That Marijuana Can Kill Cancer Cells in People With Leukemia?

My friend was recently diagnosed with leukemia. While doing some Internet research on his condition, I found some info claiming that marijuana can cure cancer. I know it sounds too good to be true, but at the same time, I don't want my friend to miss out on a treatment that could potentially help. Is it true that marijuana can kill cancerous cells in people with leukemia?

Answer

Maybe. But the unfortunate truth is that there is just not enough evidence to know which strains of marijuana and which of the many compounds in it are helpful and which are harmful. We don't yet know which people (and which cancers) will be helped or hurt by cannabis compounds.

Some people would like you to believe that cannabis in any form will kill all types of cancer cells. Research doesn't support this idea at all, as some strains (and some compounds) appear to be less helpful -- or even harmful -- and some cancers respond to cannabis by growing faster instead of dying.

We suggest that if you do want to give cannabis a try, do it with your doctor's knowledge and supervision. That way, your doctor can monitor and document your progress. You will have a better idea if the cannabis is helping or hurting. And the more these cases are documented, the more others can benefit from the knowledge gained.
