Should I Quit Smoking If I Have Diabetes?

Do I need to quit smoking if I have diabetes?

Answer

Yes. Smoking worsens the effects of diabetes and increases your risk of complications. Smoking increases blood pressure, negatively affects cholesterol levels, and interferes with glucose metabolism. As a result, your risk for stroke, heart disease, neuropathy, and kidney damage are increased.

Smoking also increases insulin resistance and hemoglobin A1c, making controlling your diabetes more difficult. Research shows that smoking while you have diabetes can increase the chance of death by 74 percent when compared to people with diabetes who do not smoke.
