The mother can transmit hepatitis C to the developing baby during pregnancy or childbirth (this is known as "vertical" transmission), but the same is not true if it is the father who has hepatitis C. Estimates of vertical transmission of hepatitis C vary, depending on how studies are performed, but it is generally accepted that about 5 percent of women with chronic hepatitis will transmit the virus to their babies.
 
Studies suggest that the rates are higher than average if a woman has both hepatitis C and HIV, although this might not be true if the woman is being adequately treated with medications for HIV. As would make sense, some studies also show that women with lower amounts of the virus in their bodies have a lower risk of transmitting it to their babies.
