Answer

Both hepatitis C and alcohol are known causes of liver disease. If you have hepatitis C, consuming alcohol not only increases your risk for further liver damage, but can also make your infection worse. Studies have shown that alcohol use causes the hepatitis C virus to replicate more quickly, makes scarring of the liver happen faster, and increases the risk for developing cirrhosis. Furthermore, chronic alcohol use may increase the risk for death in people with hepatitis C.

While most studies have linked moderate-to-heavy alcohol use with worsening hepatitis C, even low levels of alcohol consumption have been shown to be harmful. The truth is, at this time it's unclear what amount of alcohol use is safe for people with hepatitis C, if any. Therefore, if you have hepatitis C, it's best to completely abstain from consuming alcohol.
