Diabetes Health Tips

Physical activity can lower blood glucose, blood pressure, and bad cholesterol. Furthermore, regular exercise can raise your good cholesterol and improve your body's ability to use insulin.

One of the keys to staying on track is to find some activities you enjoy and stick with them. Also, it's important to talk with your doctor before starting any exercise routine.

Next: Water

Drinking plenty of water can help to increase energy, flush toxins from your body, and keep your body's organs functioning properly. High blood sugar caused by diabetes can contribute to dehydration. Whereas juice or soda can lead to a spike in blood sugar, water contains no calories and no sugar, so water is the BEST way to rehydrate the body.

Next: Healthy Eating

If you have diabetes -- what, when, and how much you eat affect your blood glucose. Eating too much, or eating at irregular times can make your blood glucose go too high or too low.

Try to eat the same amount at the same time each day, and make sure to coordinate your meals with any medications you are taking. Your doctor can help you come up with a diet and medication plan.

Next: Smoking

Not only does smoking hurt your heart and lungs, but for diabetics it can increase the risk of eye disease, stroke, damage to blood vessels, kidney disease, and liver disease. In addition, because smoking causes blood vessels to constrict, it can cause circulation problems in the feet that may lead to amputation.

So, if you don't smoke, don't start! And if you do, make quitting a priority!

Next: Foot Care

High blood glucose from diabetes can cause "diabetic feet" -- foot problems caused by nerve damage and poor blood flow. When nerve damage occurs, a person might not feel pain, heat or cold in the legs and feet. People with diabetes need to look at their feet every day to check for cuts, sores, blisters, redness, calluses, or other problems. These problems can lead to serious infections that may require amputation.
