How Can I Provide Emotional Support to My Mom With Cancer Who Is in Another State?

My mom was recently diagnosed with cancer. Normally, I would be her primary support person, taking her to appointments and doing anything I could to help her get better. However, she now lives in another state. What can I do to provide emotional support?

In this day and age, communicating with each other (and even physically visiting each other) is easier than ever. There are many different ways to "talk" with your mom, including over the phone, with text messages, in video chat, and through social media. If she's not up to speed with some of these technologies, consider helping her, perhaps buying her a smartphone or tablet to facilitate the process.
Little reminders to show her you are thinking about her are always nice. A card or a small gift in the mail will help brighten her day.
Don't forget to ask about her expectations and desires with regard to you visiting. She may (or may not) expect and want you to come and visit, and she might feel resentful or abandoned if you don't at least ask her and talk about the possibility. Open and frequent communication is key.
