You may have noticed that your child with ADHD has LOADS of extra energy. Sports and physical activities have many benefits for an ADHD child: they promote brain growth, improve concentration, and lead to better sleep. Try to find activities that require continual motion, like basketball or soccer. Martial arts training or yoga are also excellent, as they require focus and discipline.

Children with ADHD often thrive when days are predictable. Creating a routine for eating, activities, homework, and bedtime will allow your child to prepare for what is expected of them. Keep things simple and do your best to maintain a neat and organized home. Allow enough time for your child to complete his or her tasks and provide transition periods for your child to get ready for the next item on the schedule.

Kids with ADHD need at LEAST as much sleep as other children, if not more. But, frequently, children with ADHD have a difficult time getting the sleep that they need. Making an early bedtime part of your child's routine can help to solve this problem. Increasing your child's activity level during the day, cutting down on television in the evening, and eliminating caffeine can also improve your child's chances of getting a good night's sleep.

Because children with ADHD are so distractible, it is easy for them to forget meals. This often results in a pattern of unhealthy binge eating. To prevent this, schedule healthy meals and snacks every three hours as part of your daily routine. Also, limit sugar and caffeine intake, and keep junk food out of the home. Some medications may drastically decrease a child's appetite. If you are concerned about this, talk with your child's healthcare provider about your medication options.
