What Is the Most Effective Exercise for Losing Weight?

I'd like to begin an exercise routine in order to lose 15 or 20 pounds, but am not sure where to start. There's so much conflicting information about the best way to burn calories. What is the most effective exercise for losing weight?

Exercise as a whole promotes weight loss or weight maintenance by burning both calories and fat. Any type of exercise that you can do in addition to your typical everyday activities will promote weight loss and fat reduction, provided you do not make up for calories burned by eating more calories.
Aerobic exercise, such as walking or running, consistently promotes weight loss or weight maintenance. Nonaerobic exercise, such as weight lifting and calisthenics (push-ups, jumping jacks, sit-ups, etc.), will promote fat reduction but will not necessarily cause weight loss because these types of exercise increase lean body mass, or muscle.
That being said, not all types of exercise are safe for everyone, and drastic weight changes can affect certain health conditions. Talk to your healthcare provider about the types of activities that are safe for you.
