What Is CoolSculpting?

I've heard about "CoolSculpting" for weight loss, but I don't really understand what it is and how it is supposed to work. Can you provide me with some details about the technique and whether it is actually effective?

Answer

CoolSculpting is a nonsurgical method to reduce fat in areas of the midsection. It is intended for use in people who have tried to eliminate fat from their midsection through diet and exercise but have had difficulty eliminating it. This treatment applies cold to the targeted areas to freeze fat cells. Fat cells that are frozen die, and over time, the body absorbs the dead cells.

CoolSculpting appears to be effective for fat reduction. Reports say that it takes a couple of months to see the full benefit of one treatment. Theoretically, as long as a person maintains a healthy lifestyle after a CoolSculpting treatment, fat cells should not reaccumulate in the midsection. This is a relatively new treatment, however, so it is difficult to say if the outcomes are long-lasting.

Not all people who had a noticeable fat reduction after a CoolSculpting treatment lost weight. Many people maintained the weight they were at prior to the treatment. The treatment is not intended for weight loss, but rather body reshaping.

Advertisements for CoolSculpting say that the treatment may cause discomfort in the midsection. The discomfort that a person experiences will certainly depend on the individual and the size of the area being treated, but it seems that the advertisements may underemphasize the degree of discomfort that the procedure can cause for some people.

Talk to your healthcare provider about CoolSculpting if it is something you are interested in. If the procedure is appropriate for your situation, he or she may be able to refer you to a center where this treatment is offered.
