Answer

Surgery is the most effective method for weight loss in obese people. Of the different surgical methods, the Roux-en-Y (gastric bypass) procedure is most common. This procedure may be more effective than the others and may be associated with fewer complications after surgery.

Weight loss surgery is not for everyone, however, because of the risk associated with surgery and possible complications afterward. People who are extremely obese (BMI greater than or equal to 40) qualify for one of these procedures. People also qualify for weight loss surgery if they are in obesity class II (BMI greater than or equal to 35) and have a significant health condition (heart disease, diabetes, etc.) that puts them at an even greater risk of complications if they don't have surgery. Your healthcare provider can discuss your situation and whether or not you qualify for surgery.
