Do Spicy Foods Increase Weight Loss?

Do spicy foods increase your metabolism and help with weight loss? Have any particular foods been shown to be effective at helping people lose weight?

Answer

There is some preliminary data available to suggest that capsaicin, the chemical that makes chili peppers spicy, may boost metabolism. One study in rats and another study conducted in 10 men showed that fat oxidation (fat "burning") was increased after capsaicin consumption, but these studies are too preliminary to jump to any conclusions. This is an area that needs to be studied more before it can be recommended for weight loss.

No specific foods have been shown to help people lose weight. It seems that eating a balanced diet with an emphasis on portion control and reduced caloric intake is more important than eating (or not eating) specific types of foods.
