How Do I Explain about Fibromyalgia?
My friends and family don't believe that fibromyalgia is a real medical condition, but I need their help and support! What can I do?
A little education can go a long way. Find a few trustworthy, authoritative Web sites that discuss fibromyalgia and show them to your friends and family. Explain how you were diagnosed with the condition. Talk about the history of fibromyalgia -- how it was once misunderstood as being "all in one's head" but is now a recognized medical condition. If feasible, bring them along to one of your appointments.
Do your best, but also recognize that it is not your fault if they refuse to accept your medical condition. Move on, and seek support elsewhere. Perhaps they will come around in the future, but do not add stress to your life by expending too much energy to prove the legitimacy of your condition.
