People are, generally speaking, happier in the summer. Why? It turns out that sunlight is important to our bodies in a number of ways, some of which are related to mood. If you're depressed, getting additional sunlight can be helpful in alleviating your symptoms. Light therapy, which involves spending time in front of a specialized light box, can also be useful if the weather isn't cooperating.

Exercising, even in moderate doses, seems to enhance energy and reduce tension. Some depression research suggests that a rush of the hormone norepinephrine following exercise helps the brain deal with stress that often leads to depression and anxiety. The trick is to find an activity you enjoy and stick with it. Ease into any workout regimen.Walking with a friend can be a great place to start.

Sometimes it's hard to talk about what we're feeling, but we ALL need an outlet to express ourselves. Painting, poetry, gardening, music, cooking, dancing, sewing, sculpting, and working on cars are just a FEW of the many great ways that individuals can connect with themselves and express their feelings in a positive way.

Some research suggests that eating foods high in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B12 can help to level out mood. Wild salmon, flax seeds, walnuts, cabbage, and brussel sprouts are all good sources of omega-3s, while clams, octopus, liver, crab, and beef are filled with B12. In addition, if possible, avoid caffeine and never skip a meal. This will help you to avoid ups and downs in your energy level that can contribute to mood swings.

Depression is a SERIOUS illness, so don't be afraid to let your family and friends help you. Try to be with other people and to confide in someone; it is usually better than being alone and secretive. Most importantly, remember that depression is a medical condition, so seek help from a qualified healthcare provider. He or she will be able to diagnose the problem and recommend treatment for your particular situation.
