What Is Palliative Care?

What is palliative care? I know doctors use this term a lot when a person is terminally ill, but I don't know exactly what it means.

Answer

In essence, palliative care is care that is aimed at improving quality of life. This includes many different goals, such as relieving pain and other distressing symptoms, without trying to slow down or speed up the dying process.

While some people think of palliative care as something that is provided only to people who are not receiving treatments that try to cure the disease, this isn't true. Don't confuse the terms "palliative care" with "hospice care." Palliative care works nicely right alongside nonpalliative care. Similarly, although most people think of palliative care as end-of-life care, palliative care can be incorporated in any stage of a disease, even early after a person's diagnosis.
