Do Children Inherit ADHD From Their Parents?

My son was diagnosed with ADHD. Is it possible he inherited it from my husband or me?

Answer

It's definitely possible. Studies have generally confirmed that ADHD is at least somewhat genetic. Children of adults with ADHD are more likely than other kids to have it; similarly, if a kid has ADHD, there is a higher-than-average risk that at least one parent also has it.

However, genetics doesn't quite explain the whole picture. Many couples without ADHD have kids with it, and the other way around, too. It seems that the complex interplay of genes with environmental factors is to blame.

If you suspect that you or your spouse might have ADHD but you've never been diagnosed, be sure to talk with your doctor about the possibility that you might have it.
