Are ADHD Tests Just for Children?

Is testing for ADHD limited to children only?

Answer

Definitely not. ADHD is usually diagnosed based on a set of certain criteria from the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition). The DSM-5 criteria for child and adult ADHD are the same, although children must meet six of the criteria, whereas adults must meet only five.

However, if you take a self-administered screening test for ADHD, such as an online quiz, it's best to use one specifically for adults, because the same symptoms may show up in different ways for adults versus kids. For instance, questions about sitting still in class don't apply to most adults.

Although such self-screening tools are useful for pointing you in the right direction, obviously, you'll also want to be evaluated by your doctor to get an official diagnosis.
