Adult ADHD and You
There are many quick tips to staying organized! Try setting a basket next to your front door for all the keys, wallets, and mail. Put another basket on the coffee table for remote controls. Set a ten minute timer each day and organize or clean during that ten minutes. Better yet, keep organized "on the fly" by not passing an item on the floor (pick it up and hang it up), by emptying a full wastebasket, or putting loose paper in a "to-do" file box.
Next: Socialize!
Remember to keep a positive attitude and not be afraid to reach out for help in learning better social skills. It is important to be open and honest about where you are at socially. One way to improve social skills is to rehearsing for impending situations, such as group dinners or business meetings. Don't over do it! Tackle one social goal at a time.
Next: Take Care of Medication
Matching the right medication and dosage takes time as well as clear communication with your healthcare provider. It is important that you are aware of how the medication is affecting you. Keeping a log of how you feel, any side effects, and dosage amount and time will help you and your healthcare provider make an informed decision about which medication and dosage is right for you.
Next: Manage Your Money
Determine your expenses and come up with a manageable budget plan. Employ the use of a calendar and write down the expenses and incomes on the appropriate dates. Hang the calendar in location where you can see it regularly and use it as a visual cue to manage your money. There are several software programs that can also be helpful in keeping your finances in order.
Next: Time Management
Make sure you carry your day planner wherever you go. Better yet, if you have a smartphone try using the default planner or download one from the provider's application store. It is critical that you keep your planner up to date and check it regularly to make sure you are on track. Your day planner is also a great place to keep quick notes or ideas you may have. Adults with ADHD tend to have a constant stream of ideas that are often forgotten. Putting your thoughts in your planner let's you keep track of them.
